Atlas of Brooklyn

A collection of maps showcasing neglected spaces throughout Brooklyn. Each map represents the same path but is rendered in a unique style, highlighting how variations in design and symbolism influence interpretation. Some emphasize clarity and functionality, while others take a more abstract approach.

Neglected Spaces Map

These visuals make the locations immediately recognizable without needing interpretation, creating a map that feels more personal and inviting. This piece restructures the neighborhood to prioritize aesthetics and storytelling.

Site Specific (Garage Map)

This map zooms in on a specific location from the previous map, the parking garage. This combines technical precision with an illustrative style. The result creates a map that is not inherently positive or negative, offering a truthful representation of the parking garage’s current state.

Auditory Map

This map follows the same route as the others  but through the perspective of sound. It focuses more on the journey as a whole instead of each spot. While walking the path that connects the neglected locations the soundscape was collected and visualized through fluid symbols. They are depicted dynamically to reflect the fleeting nature of sound.

Navigational Map

Abiding by strict structures, this map prioritizes functionality and usability over creativity. It focuses on accurate spacing and clear navigation to ensure someone can move easily from point A to point B. This piece adhered to precise rules, maintaining accurate proportions and layouts.

Abstract Map

This map uses bold, three-dimensional symbols with rough, stone-like textures to represent 16 neglected places in Brooklyn. The rendering of the symbols conveys a sense of decay, reflecting the urgent need for these spaces to be reimagined.
